Literacy courses are an essential bridge to integration and participation in social life for adults who, for various reasons, have not been able to learn to read and write. These courses are aimed both at people born in Germany and at immigrants who face the additional challenge of learning German and familiarizing themselves with the Latin writing system at the same time.

Target group

  • People who have never learned to read and write.
  • People who want to improve their reading and writing skills.
  • People who want to improve their German language skills in addition to reading and writing.
  • People who want to participate more confidently in everyday life in Germany.

Course content

In the literacy courses, participants are not only taught to read and write in the Latin writing system in up to 1,200 teaching units, but also acquire knowledge of the German language at the same time. The focus is not only on teaching the language, but also on promoting learning strategies that help participants to continue learning independently and support each other.

Objective

The main aim of these courses is to give participants the tools they need to cope with everyday life and actively participate in society. The aim is to boost participants’ self-confidence and show them that they too can make valuable contributions to society.

Why a literacy course?

  • Integration and participation: The ability to read and write is fundamental for participation in social, professional and private life.
  • Independence: Increased independence in everyday life through better reading skills, e.g. when reading street signs, filling out forms or understanding written information.
  • Career opportunities: Improved career prospects through the ability to read and understand work instructions and professional communication.
  • Personal development: discovering new ways of learning and living by expanding your own skills and knowledge.

Literacy courses are therefore a key tool for people who want to develop personally and professionally by learning to read and write. They not only offer the opportunity to learn basic cultural skills, but also the chance to play an active role in society and shape their own lives in a self-determined way.
