The TestDaF is the most important German language test for international applicants and a “milestone” on your way to a German university: The certificate officially proves that you are linguistically ready to start your studies. Academics can also use the TestDaF to prepare for research stays at German universities.
TheTestDaFis a language test at an advanced level. It covers levels B2 to C1 on the six-level scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
If you have completed all four parts of the TestDaF with TestDaF level 4, the certificate is valid as proof of language proficiency for admission to almost all subjects and degree programs at German universities.
The TestDaF language test is also an internationally recognized proof of your German language skills for scientific projects and academic professions.
Specialist knowledge is not required for the examination.
TDN 3
If the performance corresponds to TDN 3, the participant is able to extract the most important information from texts that deal with everyday study life. Scientific texts still pose too great a challenge. Participants can write a text on a topic they are familiar with, but which still contains errors that can hinder comprehension. Mistakes are also made when speaking, which can lead to misunderstandings.
TDN 4
Participants who reach level TDN 4 in the exam can understand demanding texts on both concrete and abstract topics. They are also able to write a structured text without making mistakes that hinder comprehension. A normal conversation with native speakers, i.e. spontaneously and on different topics, can take place due to the sufficient language skills of the participants.
TDN 5
Long and complex texts on many different topics can be understood both globally and in detail by learners who reach level TDN 5. Implicit information, such as the author’s attitude or irony, can be understood. Only a few mistakes are made when writing texts on complex issues, but these do not hinder the comprehension of the text. The flow of speech can be described as spontaneous and fluent, i.e. the participants do not have to search for words.
The TestDaF tests the competence areas of reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression in four subtests. All four subtests are mandatory and have the same weighting. The topics and tasks of the test are related to the university context, but are not subject-specific, but generally understandable.
The entire test, including all instructions, is written in German.
University admission
As a rule, you must achieve at least TDN 4 in each part of the exam in order to be admitted to university in Germany. However, as each university has its own admission regulations, some universities also accept lower results than TDN 4 for individual degree programs. For this reason, applicants should inform themselves about this in good time.
Yes. You can repeat the exam as often as you like. You must repeat the entire examination – written and oral.

The examination fee is 210,-€.
Please arrive at our test center at least 30 to 45 minutes before the start of the test.
You must have a valid identity card or passport with you, as well as your participant number from the TestDaF registration form.
We offer you a targeted exam preparation course at our school. You can find it here.
The evaluation usually takes 6 weeks. As soon as we, the examination center, have the results, we will inform you immediately. You can then collect your certificate on presentation of your identity card.
With an original signed power of attorney and a copy of your identity card, the certificate can also be collected by another person. Please remember that the person collecting the ticket must also have their identity card or passport with them.
The TestDaF certificate is valid indefinitely and is recognized by all universities in Germany.
